Ignition-Built CMMS Reduces Cost & Expands Functionality For EV Auto Maker

Project Overview

Lucid Motors replaced a rigid, cost-prohibitive CMMS platform with a solution built entirely in Ignition that not only fulfilled the tasks performed by the previous system, but also allowed for a variety of improvements and enhancements.

Challenges
Lucid previously utilized the CMMS platform FIIX, which operates on a per-user license model. As Lucid continued to grow and expand its operations across new sites and international locations, the number of users naturally increased. This growth led to a corresponding rise in licensing needs, prompting a strategic evaluation of scalable solutions to better support Lucid’s evolving footprint. FIIX allowed the plant to complete the following tasks:

  • Assets
  • Scheduled Preventive Maintenance
  • Manually Created Work Orders
  • Users and User Groups
  • Task Groups
  • Parts Inventory
  • KPI displays for generated work

Lucid has an extensive Ignition server layout for supporting many operational and display-oriented projects. The team identified the opportunity to develop an in-house CMMS project directly in the Ignition platform, with the main goal of supporting the business cost initiative. By utilizing Ignition, Lucid’s plant gained the following advantages:

  • One-time license fee
  • No additional costs for adding users
  • Flexibility to develop custom solutions for different shops
  • Future integrations with SAP and PLCs for work order triggers
  • Open database source for data analytics
  • Expansion to other sites and countries without additional cost

However, implementing the Ignition-based CMMS system posed several challenges:

  • Data migration from the existing platform, including assets, files, task groups, etc.
  • Developing custom logic to trigger the PMs based on schedule configuration.
  • Conveying to operators how this custom project would add benefit to their daily operations.
  • Building additional features to make the new CMMS more attractive and useful.
  • Accessibility of the project across the different network security layouts.

Solution
The Lucid internal Ignition development team developed an end-to-end solution for a customized CMMS platform solely implemented with the Ignition platform. The team developed the following modules:

  • Asset management (asset groups)
  • Preventive maintenance creation from asset groups
  • Preventive maintenance configurations based on scheduled triggers
  • Parts inventory management tool
  • Manually created work orders
  • Files management for assets and tasks
  • Users and user groups
  • Mobile development for technicians’ work order completions
  • Data importing tools
  • Plantwide visibility for KPI dashboards and reports
  • Integration with third-party applications
  • Integrate with SAP data transfer

Result
Lucid has seen the flexibility offered by Ignition. The team has tackled every single request without ever saying that it’s not possible using the Ignition platform. The FIIX platform was very rigid and did not allow users to append simple improvements that are now possible with Ignition. The project requirements only keep expanding and Lucid foresees a plethora of requests for process enhancements.
